"Hi, my name is Beth, I'm the volunteer on duty..."

Yesterday was my second day in the ED, and echoing my last post, I absolutely loved it. I met some of the most interesting people. I went into one patient's room to ask if he was warm enough, and then we talked for almost the next two hours. He told me his whole life story...incredible. Turns out he graduated from my same alma mater 58 years prior! There were so many times when you could see some tension release from either patients or their loved ones when I offered them a blanket or a drink. It's amazing what a big smile and a simple "Can I do anything to make you more comfortable?" will do for someone. I didn't want to leave. My shift technically was supposed to end at 4, but I didn't leave until 5:30, I was so wrapped up with the patients. It got pretty busy too, but the time I left, they had no more rooms left, and had to use the beds in the hallway.

It's great to be able to experience this sense of calling, as I've never really felt this passionate about anything in my life before.

To end this happy note, I'm going to go make pancakes!
