Again, just got back from another great afternoon in the ER. Take home message of the day? NO ONE is invinceable.
I was able to spend time with a man who is in his early 60s, but looks like he is about 40. He runs every day, and has run 73,000 miles since the 1970s--something like an average of 6 miles a day. His resting heart rate was 55, and he was showing me how he would mess with the nurses and bring it down to 50 and 49 (that's when an alarm goes off). He came into the hospital because he was having some tightness in his chest and neck area while he was running, and his PCP sent him over. Turns out he had a heart attack sometime recently. Amazing, considering he is not the typical heart attack patient at all. To make things even more interesting, his brother (who is also a serious runner), has been complaining of the same exact pain, and when the two brothers talked to each other on the phone today, the one I was with told the other to get himself to a hospital ASAP. Therefore the moral of the story is, you can be in the best shape of your life but your genes will work against you. No one is bullet proof.
