Today was a pretty busy day in the ER. Busy enough that I actually changed a bedpan for a patient, which technically I'm not supposed to do (says the volunteer office people), but it was too crazy to ask a nurse. We had two trauma patients come in at the same time. One got clipped by a car while riding a skateboard, the other lost control of his bike and crashed into a telephone pole, snapping his femur in half mid-shaft. OUCH. I didn't get a good look at his leg, but although the bone didn't break the skin, you could definitely tell that he had snapped it in half because it was pressing into his skin. Whatever they were doing to it initially, he was letting out that painful scream that made everyone cringe. I would not like to be the person recovering from that.
