Yesterday was a big day for us, as we got our cadavers. The professor talked to us about the seriousness of what we were going to see/do, what we could do if we felt uncomfortable, etc. I was actually concerned that I was being too insensitive because it didn't bother me at all, but I'm guessing it was because of my childhood and what I was exposed to. Most schools will start cadaver dissections at the back and leave the face for last, to lessen the shock of what you are doing. We started right in on the face. My group has an elderly male that is no bigger than I am, which is good for several reasons. Yesterday we identified 6 or so of the 20+ face muscles, found the major superficial artery and vein, looked inside the skull (brains were removed) to see the different landmarks, and taught a touring group of high school students what we were doing. I will brag a little bit though, our group managed to find all 5 branches of the facial nerve which is unheard of for students. The prof was pretty impressed.
Today is nice because technically I have it off. There are 6 people to a cadaver, but only three will dissect on a lab day. We'll alternate and teach the other group what we did. I'll be at school at 9 to present to my classmates what we did before they start dissecting, then I'm going to finish getting caught up from Tuesday (I was so tired by the end of that day I didn't do any studying, but thankfully I'm almost all caught up).
Tonight all three PA classes (2010, 2011, 2012) are going to go to a local brewery/restaurant, which should be fun. It will be the only time we'll all be on campus at once, since the 10s are graduating and the 11s start rotations soon. It has a large outside deck which will be AWESOME. I appreciate any outside time I can get, since I am basically at school 7-7 or 8-8.
